HAUS OF ASSEVERATION · BLACK BARTERING · LESSON 01
The Morning the Paycheck Stopped

The story
Nia reads the layoff email before breakfast. Rent is due in two weeks. She is furious: years of reliable work reduced to a calendar invite. Her neighbor asks what she can do. Nia starts with her old job title, then remembers she also edits résumés, alters clothes, organizes events, and helps people make sense of forms.
The lesson
A job ending is a loss of income, not a loss of every useful skill. Start with an honest inventory of what you have, what you need, and what still requires cash.
See it in action
Nia lists résumé editing, a sewing machine, and four free hours on Saturdays. She needs prepared meals and childcare, but she puts rent, utilities, medication, and transportation in a separate cash-required column.
Try it in three steps
- Write three columns: HAVE, NEED, CASH REQUIRED.
- List skills and items you can safely offer, plus your available time.
- Circle one modest need that a fair trade could meet this week.
Protect your value: Do not put your last essential item, housing, medication, or needed cash at risk to prove you are willing to trade.
Your move
Make your three-column inventory. One entry in each column is enough to begin.
These are fictional teaching scenarios. Check terms, safety, taxes, and any benefits rules that apply to your circumstances.
