Black Bartering During Hard Economic Times
A layoff can take a paycheck. It does not erase what you know how to do. This free course follows Nia, a fictional Black worker who loses her job and helps her neighbors build a fair, accountable exchange circle. The situation is invented; the practical tools are for real life.
We have every reason to be angry about unstable work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the annual average Black unemployment rate rose from 6.0% in 2024 to 6.9% in 2025. Those figures describe unemployment, not a count of layoffs. See BLS annual data.
Across five modules and 15 lessons, you will identify what you can offer, name what you need, value trades, set boundaries, document agreements, and plan a small exchange day. Every module ends with a practical assignment. You can use fictional examples if you do not feel safe sharing your circumstances.
Barter can help conserve cash; it cannot replace wages, benefits, rent money, or public assistance. Business-related barter may create taxable income; the course links to IRS guidance.
