LaVena Johnson | Army Suicide Finding Disputed by Family
U.S. Army investigators concluded that 19-year-old soldier LaVena Johnson died by suicide while deployed in Iraq. Her family has long rejected that finding and has publicly argued that the circumstances warrant a different conclusion.

Record Summary
At a Glance
The Hall records both sides of a long-running dispute: the Army’s official suicide determination and the Johnson family’s continuing rejection of that conclusion.
Official Record
The Army Stands by a Suicide Finding
Army Criminal Investigation Command has publicly stated that forensic, physical and testimonial evidence supported a suicide determination and that the Armed Forces medical examination reached the same conclusion. Army CID has said it would reopen the investigation if new credible information emerged.
Documented Dispute
The Family Rejects the Official Conclusion
LaVena Johnson’s family has repeatedly said it does not believe she died by suicide. Her father obtained investigative records and photographs and publicly raised questions about injuries, the scene and the investigation. A family-arranged exhumation and independent autopsy in 2007 was reported as inconclusive.
An independent cold-case group later reviewed the material and told St. Louis Public Radio that it did not find new evidence that suggested wrongdoing and did not disagree with the Army’s conclusion.
Why This Record Matters
Preserving Disagreement Without Replacing Evidence
This record belongs in Disputed Death because an official finding exists and the family has maintained a documented, sustained dispute. The Hall does not convert the family’s allegations into an official homicide finding and does not erase the family’s questions simply because the legal record is closed.
