Make It Feel Like Us: Cultural Relevance Without Performing

Cultural relevance is not adding slang to generic material. It is designing examples, context, language, challenges, and solutions that reflect the actual lives of the people you serve.

Core Teaching

The Boss Principle

Cultural relevance is not adding slang to generic material. It is designing examples, context, language, challenges, and solutions that reflect the actual lives of the people you serve.

REMEMBER
You are not trying to sound impressive. You are trying to make the next decision obvious for your student.

Framework

Build It Step by Step

1
Use familiar contexts
Build examples from the workplaces, families, communities, beauty standards, financial realities, faith traditions, neighborhoods, and digital spaces your students know.
2
Do not stereotype
Black women are not one audience. Specificity should create recognition, not flatten people into a caricature.
3
Teach institutional literacy
When relevant, help students distinguish between a personal skill gap and a systemic barrier.
4
Build dignity into the curriculum
Students should leave with more agency, not more shame.

Do This Now
Replace one generic example in your outline with an example your actual student would recognize immediately.

Quick Reflection

  • What part of this lesson is already clear to you?
  • Where are you still making the idea broader or harder than it needs to be?
  • What is one decision you can make before opening the next lesson?

Your knowledge is an asset. Build it like one.
