Mothers are usually loving, nurturing and caring but that isnât always the case in movies, especially when it comes to my favorite genre, horror.
There was a time, in horror cinema, when a mother that simply wanted to work outside the home was blamed for the horrific things that happened to her children.
For example, in the movie version of The Exorcist, itâs implied that Reaganâs mother, Chris, was responsible for her daughter becoming possessed. The reason? Chris focused on her career. In the book, the blame is even clearer. She put her career before her husband and daughter.
With The Shining, Stephen King said in 2013 in an interview with the BBC said that Shelley Duvallâs portrayal of Wendy Torrance was, "one of the most misogynistic characters ever put on film and that she was basically just there to scream and be stupid and that’s not the woman I wrote about." He didnât care for Stanley Kubrickâs interpretation of his novel.
